One Night Only — March 27, 2019

Pianist Maurizio Pollini will join Music Director Jaap van Zweden and the New York Philharmonic for a one-night-only performance of Schumann’s Piano Concerto, Wednesday, March 27, 2019, at 7:30 p.m. The program will also include Johan Wagenaar’s Cyrano de Bergerac Overture and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7.

Maurizio Pollini will return to the Philharmonic 50 years after his debut with the Orchestra. He most recently appeared with the Philharmonic in October 2015. The New York Times wrote of that appearance: “It was clear why the audience rose to its feet immediately for a long ovation at the end … Mr. Pollini played this demanding work with profound integrity…. this performance offered a lifetime of insight.” Gramophone wrote that Maurizio Pollini “brings as much temperament and intensity … as if Schumann’s youthful heart was his own” in its review of his 2001 album of works by Schumann.

BBC Music Magazine wrote of Jaap van Zweden and the New York Philharmonic’s 2018 Decca Gold recording of Beethoven’s Symphonies Nos. 5 and 7: “These are amazing performances, recorded live, with thoroughly deserved cheers… I imagine that the New York Philharmonic is thrilled to have so invigorating and colourful a figure as Jaap van Zweden as their chief conductor…. overall this is a triumph, to be listened to especially by anyone who feels they don’t have an urgent need to listen to these works again.”
