»Identity« is the motto of the fourth Hamburg International Music Festival, which runs from 27 April to 29 May 2019. After the three previous festivals in 2014, 2016 and 2018, the International Music Festival is now preparing to take place annually: in the future, it will be right at the top of the city's event calendar each year. This time round, 52 concerts with 37 different programmes combine to create a dense and high-class festival schedule with a wide variety of musical styles. The featured composer in 2019 is the Austro-Hungarian György Ligeti (1923 – 2006), who taught for 16 years at Hamburg’s Hochschule für Musik und Theater. The highlight of this spotlight consists of three performances of the only opera Ligeti composed, »Le Grand Macabre«, featuring well-known soloists and the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra under its principal conductor-designate Alan Gilbert. Among the other illustrious guests at the festival are violinists Anne-Sophie Mutter and Christian Tetzlaff, pianists Hélène GrimaudKrystian ZimermanDaniel BarenboimPierre Laurent Aimard and Jason Moran, the soprano Elīna Garanča, the baritone Christian GerhaherSasha Waltz & Gueststhe Arditti Quartet and Orchestre de Paristhe Bamberg Symphony Orchestra and the orchestra Ludwig conducted by Barbara Hannigan. 44 of the 52 concerts will be held at the Elbphilharmonie, 27 of them in the Grand Hall, while four concerts will take place at the Laeiszhalle and three at Kampnagel. Tickets for all events go on sale on Tuesday, 20 November, at 11:00 (CET). A number of tickets are still available for previously announced concerts that have been on sale from summer 2018.
