Mozart’s Requiem on stage by Romeo Castellucci
Source: Festival d’Aix
05/07/2019

The Festival d’Aix is starting with Mozart on the emblematic stage of the Théâtre de l’Archevêché. This well-known and highly popular unfinished work is a mass for the dead that rejoices life. With his version, Romeo Castellucci, a major figure in theater today, has created a unique festival project. For the first time at Aix, the Italian director has taken up the challenge of bringing Requiem out of the church and into the concert hall; he will enrich the production with other pieces by Mozart and with Gregorian chants, and liven the event with folk dancing. Raphaël Pichon, a great admirer of the Salzburg-born composer, will be conducting this new production and, along with his Pygmalion ensemble, honoring the composer’s musical genius three times: with two concerts dedicated to Mozart’s last four symphonies, and a third concert juxtaposing Mozart’s work with that of his contemporaries.
