September at the OSM A commanding opening: Mahler’s “Symphony of a Thousand”
Tuesday, September 19 – 7 p.m.
Under the direction of maestro Kent Nagano, the OSM raises the curtain on its season with Mahler’s Symphony no. 8 in E-flat major, known as “Symphony of a Thousand,” a sweeping work for soloists, chorus and orchestra. Described by Mahler as “the whole universe beginning to ring and resound,” this magisterial work brings together more than 350 people on stage, including the OSM Chorus, under the stellar direction of Andrew Megill, and the Petits Chanteurs du Mont-Royal, directed by Andrew Gray. The soloists will be Sarah Wegener, Camilla Tilling and Aline Kutan, soprano; Allyson McHardy and Marie-Nicole Lemieux, mezzo-soprano; Michael Schade, tenor; Russell Braun, baritone; and David Steffens, bass.
